The false acacia (black locust) is native to the United States and was introduced to Europe since the 17th century. Since the 18th century it was cultivated in many European countries to stabilize sandy soils, and then it began to spread uncontrolled, becoming an invasive species. In Romania, the largest areas of false acacia are found in Oltenia, Muntenia, Dobrogea, and Moldova.

Black locust honey is one of the main monofloral honeys in Europe, one of the most common honey types in temperate Europe, from East to West, from Ukraine and Moldova, to France. It can also be found in the Mediterranean Basin, but in smaller quantities, especially in northern Italy. It is a common honey in Russia and the USA, too.

It is very light in colour, being preferred by those looking for a liquid honey with a flavour not too intense.
