Buckwheat is a plant of Asian origin, supposedly brought to Europe by the Mongols. There is a strong tradition of buckwheat consumption in many countries of the former USSR, meaning there are large fields cultivated of this plant, which is a false cereal. Buckwheat was also traditionally consumed in countries such as France, Germany and Canada, but it has almost disappeared in recent decades.
In Romania, buckwheat is cultivated on small areas, so buckwheat honey is not common, it is a rarity. On the other hand, it is much more common in Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, where buckwheat is a staple food.
Buckwheat honey has a strong, malty aroma. It is almost black when liquid, turning dark brown when it crystallizes. It’s a honey with a strong character, much appreciated by some consumers.
