A distinction must be made between cultivated hemp, grown mainly for oil and fibre; and Indian hemp (Cannabis sativa ssp. indica), the subspecies known as cannabis. Today, only about 5% of the area planted with hemp under the Communist rule is still cultivated in Romania, so hemp honey is very rare: experimental, rather than commercial. There are still a few hemp growers, especially in the counties of Suceava and Botoșani.
Hemp honey has a very discreet aroma, it is almost odourless and the taste is weak, with no specific taste.
