Finland’s Inari region stretches beyond the Arctic Circle, at 68-69º N, making Inari honey arguably the northernmost honey in the world. This is the borderland between the taiga (boreal forest) and tundra (permafrost) vegetation, with coniferous forests and undergrowth dominated by species of plants of the Rosaceae, Fabaceae and Ericaceae families, well adapted to the arctic cold.

Honey from the Inari area is produced in very small quantities due to unfavourable climatic conditions. It is fragrant and fruity; and remains liquid for a long time. The most common species are:
Vaccinium myrtillus
Empetrum nigrum
Rubus arcticus
Rubus chamaemorus
Rubus saxatilis
Comarum palustre
Filipendula ulmaria
Sorbus aucuparia
Astragalus alpinus
Astragalus frigidus
