Silkweed is a plant native to North America that has been introduced to Europe and has since become invasive. Although it has great melliferous potential, in Hungary it is considered a real threat to the local ecosystem. Sometimes, however, it is cultivated ornamentally for its large and very fragrant flowers.
Silkweed honey has a discreet, floral aroma. The taste is also floral, pleasant, without a lingering aftertaste. It remains liquid for a long time and is a very fluid honey, similar to black locust honey, only a little darker in colour.
In Hungary it is also known as ‘wild tobacco honey’ and is considered to be a Hungarian specific product. It is obtained in Vojvodina (Serbia) too, very close to the Serbian-Hungarian border.
