Sweet (edible) chestnut is a Mediterranean tree, which can also grow at higher latitudes if it finds suitable conditions. This is the chestnut tree whose fruits are edible, unlike the chestnut trees found in Romanian cities, with candle-shaped flowers, which are ornamental, with inedible fruit.
Chestnut honey is one of the most mineralized types of honey, it has a strong bitter aftertaste and remains liquid for a long time. It is a common honey in countries with a Mediterranean climate. In Romania, the sweet chestnut is cultivated mainly in areas of Oltenia, Mehedinți, and Baia Mare. This type of honey is produced in Romania in much smaller quantities than in the Mediterranean basin.
Chestnut honey is a very bitter, highly mineralized honey. It remains liquid for a long time and is very viscous.
