Vanilla Menalou honey comes from the prefecture of Menalon, in the Arcadia region of the Peloponnese peninsula. It is not a vanilla honey, nor vanilla-infused, but a honey with a intense vanilla taste, naturally present thanks to the species of fir from which it is harvested – Abies cephalonica, native to the island of Kefalonia and spread throughout the Peloponnese above 800 m.
It is the first Greek honey to be awarded the Protected Designation of Origin label by the European Union, and in order to be marketed under this designation, at least 80% of the honey must come from the tree’s own tree.
It is a unique, exquisite honey, with a beige (chocolate milk) colour. When fresh, it has silver hues. It has an extremely pleasant taste and a sticky texture. It is rare honey, not available every year.
