Common heather grows in many mountainous areas in Europe (and, in the North of the continent, even in low areas). This is a common type of honey in Western and Northern Europe, but in Romania it is quite rare, as heather grows in smaller areas, mainly in the Apuseni Range, at an altitude of about 1000 – 1500 m.

It is one of the honey types with a rare feature – thixotropy: when at rest, it is in a gel state, but when agitated (stirred vigorously) it becomes liquid and flows. Left at rest again, it naturally returns to its gel state. It is a intense honey with a malty flavour.
