Native to North America, staghorn sumac was introduced as an ornamental plant in Europe, but has spread out of control and in some countries is considered invasive. It is related to, and often mistaken for, the shrub from which comes the sumac spice, highly prized around the Middle East: Rhus coriaria.

Staghorn sumac honey is rather rare, with a floral aroma and a specific, slightly harsh taste.
