In temperate Europe there are several species of pine, four of which are also found in Romania. Pine grows in mountainous areas. In Romania, the most widespread species is the Scots pine, while the Banat variety of the black pine grows mainly in the calcareous areas of the Mehedinți Range. The mountain pine grows widely in the Bucegi Mountains, and the Swiss pine in the Southern and Eastern Carpathians.

Pine honey is common in Mediterranean areas, but somewhat rarer in Romania and in temperate Europe, where pine groves are frequently interspersed with other conifers.

Pine honey is a typical honeydew honey, with a strong, woody, resinous aroma. It is highly viscous and remains liquid for a very long time.
